Fun Things to do

Many people, before their first trip to the island, wonder what, if anything, they'll do when they arrive. As the island is filled with fun stuff to do, I've put together this page to point you in a few directions. As some of these activities are seasonal, be flexible. I've broken the activities into three categories to fit your mood and body.

A. BOUNDLESS ENERGY: You are young or young in spirit and your body can take you where your mind wants to go.

1. Kayaking and Snorkeling: Go and see Michelle or Chip at the Wet Spot or a kayak for all the gear you will need to snorkel before you go. Also, stop by Vons and pick up a one time use (waterproof) camera and you can show off the pictures of hundreds of brightly colored fish that you saw on your adventure...

2. Rent a BIke: Stop at Browns; bring some water and bike Avalon's beautiful vistas. It is great exercise and if you like you can rent a two-person bike and bring a friend.

3. Take a Hike: Whether it is a walk to the Wrigley Memorial, a trek up to Zane Grey's former home, or a hike up any of Avalon's rolling hills, the views are incredible.

4. Underwater Fun: Catalina's pristine reefs are consistently ranked as one of the West Coast's best diving spots. Find out why.

5. Jet Skis: Avalon's beautiful coastline is a great place to enjoy the waves while watching the beautiful scenery pass you by. Try The Barge for great jet ski rentals.

B. BOUNDED ENERGY: You want to get out, but you came to relax.

1. Golfing: A 5 minute walk from my home takes you to the Catalina Country Club (open to the public) and a great way to spend a couple of hours (it's 9 holes).

2. Fishing: Whether you fish from the boat landing, from a boat you rented from Joe on the Green Pier, or a deep sea charter, it won't take too long to figure out why the first sport fishing club in the country (The Tuna Club) was started right here on Catalina.

3. Parasailing: If you've never tried it for fear of heights, it may sound ominous, but actually it's lots of fun. You can even get a video made to show all your friends back home how brave you were.

4. Horseback Riding: The stables are a short walk from my home and will guarantee a long memory.

5. Miniature Golf: My children love this course and you'll want to get there before they build a new Von's grocery store.

6. Pedal Boats: Out on the green pier you can rent pedal boats to travel around the harbor and check out the sail boats that are everywhere. For you early risers, often times they have specials for half price pedal boats before 9 a.m.

C. AUTOPILOT: You are on vacation. You left your energy "overtown". You have come to relax in a sweet small town.

1. Great Food: The list of great restaurants in Catalina is constantly growing. Whether it's an oceanfront meal of fresh seafood at Armstrong's, hot dogs at the Coney Island Co., pizza and pasta at Cafe Prego or Antonio's, or a gourmet meal at the Country Club, you shouldn't be disappointed. You can also call the Buffalo Nickel (which is a little bit of a walk) and they will pick you up in their courtesy van and take you to the restaurant where you can get everything from a buffalo burger to nachos piled very high. Don't forget to save room for the famous waffle cone at Big Olaf's!

2. Great Views: In addition to Catalina's magnificent views of nature, people watching on Catalina is always intriguing.

3. The Picture Show: Whether you see a movie in the art deco Casino movie theater (one movie a week), rent one from The Video Store, or buy one from Sugarloaf books, it will prove enjoyable and relaxing.

4. Tours: The Island Company has tours that range from a few minutes to many hours. You can see the interior of the island where you might even catch sight of a bison or you could tour the streets of Avalon and learn about the history. A favorite of most is the tour of the beautiful Casino which includes the theater, the ballroom, and free admission into the museum. There is also a tram that you can catch that will take you around Avalon and up to the Wrigley Memorial.

5. The Nightlife: Whether you prefer Karaoke at El Galleon, the bands at the Chi Chi Club or the The Landing, or the shows brought to Avalon Live, there is something for everyone.

6. Shopping: Last, but not least, there are so many stores along the shoreline as well as up and down every street that you could shop all day and hardly see it all. Clothes, gifts and other fun things made only on the island are sure to delight young and old. Some of my favorites are Island Nautical (stylish embroidered clothes), HIgh TIde Traders (fishing gear and tips), Latitude 33 (island wear), CC Gallagher (espresso bar and boutique), and Buoys and Gulls (topsiders).
